These guys sure know how to make an entrance, at least. “I’m here, darling!” Sanji announces once he sees her.ĭove rubs a hand over her face, sighing. Sanji and Franky enter the car leisurely, complimenting each other on their handiwork. Fortunately, a man comes flying through the aisle from the car behind them before she can protest… and then another body falls through the ceiling right after. Usopp stands, looking quite pleased with himself. “Nice of Usopp to send us reinforcements,” she says. (She indulges him, because he’s had a rough week.) And judging by the ridiculous mask he’s wearing and the voice he’s putting on, Dove has an idea of his intentions. He nervously whips his head back and forth from her to Robin to the CP9 agents. “I-I mean, Usopp’s friend, there you are. “Oh, Dove, there you-” He stops, clearing his throat. Usopp tumbles in from the window she’d broken through earlier. “Whatever last-ditch effort you’ve come up with to save Nico Robin from her fate, it’s useless.”ĭove grins as she reaches into her bag. Nothing special, she realizes, and that’s why she can smile so easily when Rob Lucci calls her bluff. (It also gives her the courage she needs to face her fears.)Īnd so-as Rob Lucci towers over her with those same dark eyes, dark curls, and dark suit she’s imagined so many times before, going on about justice and sacrifice and the good of humanity, Dove thinks:īecause the reminder of the worst day of her life, the agent carrying out their government’s sins, the representation of her greatest fears…Īrrogant and self-righteous, like so many other men. That they’ll be able to work things out with Usopp. Well, it gives Dove hope that they’ll get Robin out of the mess she’s in. (It’s something the Straw Hats are all a bit scared of, and she suspects that’s why they get along so well-their ragtag, little group of slightly broken people.)Īnd the fact that they were somehow able to find each other, in this crazy world? And while her captain has grown up to be even more fearless than he was as a child, Dove still thinks being alone is the exception. There were a few times, back on Dawn Island, that Dove sang it to Luffy when he had trouble sleeping-kept up by Shanks’s crazy tales, or just his general loneliness. (He wasn’t a great singer by any means, but apparently it was something her mother sang while she was pregnant with her, and that was enough of a comfort.) So on the nights she found herself waking from nightmares of flames and gunshots and shadow-faced men, Father would comfort her with a story and a soft melody. Selling out your family for money and power. Abandoning your countrymen at the slightest face of adversity. Persecuting those who were different from you. Because she learned early on that human nature was… It was people that scared her-and that continue to scare her.
